               For Beth Herstein


I followed the crowd deeper into the park area
past where he & I normally stood when he was able to come
moving in a pack carrying bottles of water some belongings
like nomads and recalled those days after 9/11
walking around street closings & check points 
that feeling of displacement I had then  his absence brought on now
the thickening darkness   way the street broke off 
curved in two opposite directions  nearly tripped
on some broken concrete and lights
shining in my eyes throwing me off so
I kept bumping into Beth who thought
 it was her fault  both of us  apologizing
and trudged on to where everyone stopped
looked up at something disappointing
 before the sky exploded--- 
didn't know color could have such a loud sound
for a half hour I didn't worry about his failing health
new airport security threats & another bulls eye 
targeting my city...
we cheered, clapped and with each star burst of color
lighting up the sky  a late 20th century feeling of
invincibility spread among us...Beth and
others held up cell phones to capture what
eluded language and would also elude their photos.
